Effortless No-Bake Rocky Road Melon Dessert Skewers: Your Ultimate Potluck & Kid-Friendly Treat
The familiar dread washes over me. Another sports wind-up, the second one this week, and once again, it’s a potluck. My assignment: dessert. My mind, however, is a complete blank. I need something quick, absolutely no-bake, undeniably delicious, and most importantly, something that will appeal to a crowd of energetic kids and their parents. The pressure is on, and inspiration seems miles away. Then, a sudden, brilliant idea sparks: Dessert Skewers!
Looking back, I don’t recall these frequent sports wind-ups during my own childhood. Perhaps it’s because I was never really a ‘sports person.’ My athletic career was brief, limited to a couple of years playing baseball, and frankly, that was enough. My earliest encounters with sports and physical education left me with more than just sore muscles; they left lasting impressions.
I won’t burden you with the painful specifics, but suffice it to say, my formative sports experiences involved a challenging combination of fiercely competitive, sometimes even sociopathic, ‘mean girls’ and those infamous Participaction awards. The latter, intended to encourage activity, often felt like a public performance that highlighted my lack of natural athleticism. I nearly didn’t graduate high school because I desperately needed just one physical education credit. After that, I actively avoided anything remotely athletic for many, many years, content to sit on the sidelines.
The Sweet Solution: Delicious Dessert Skewers for Every Occasion
But let’s pivot back to happier, tastier matters: Dessert Skewers! These delightful creations are an absolute game-changer, especially for potlucks. Seriously, who can resist dessert on a stick? It’s inherently fun, portable, and perfect for casual gatherings. Plus, if you cleverly incorporate some fruit, you can even feel a tiny bit less guilty about serving up another round of refined sugar to those adorable youngsters. After all, fruit is healthy, right? And let’s be honest, what child (or adult, for that matter) doesn’t adore marshmallows? And then there are two-bite brownies… well, ’nuff said! The decision was made. Dessert skewers it would be.
My Journey Back to Sports: From Soccer to Rediscovered Passion
Life, however, has a funny way of bringing us back to what we once avoided. In my late 20s, after I finally quit smoking, embraced running, and committed to a healthier lifestyle, I started to feel a void. I realized I had never truly experienced being part of a ‘team,’ and I longed for that sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. So, I took a leap of faith. I decided to try soccer, and to my surprise, I completely fell in love with the game.
That initial phone call to the Calgary Women’s Soccer Association marked my unexpected foray back into the world of organized sports. I genuinely didn’t expect them to have a place for someone like me, with absolutely no prior experience or discernable skill. But it seems my timing was serendipitous. That very first year playing soccer, I even managed to win the ‘most improved’ award! It was a genuinely joyful and exhilarating experience for several years, a stark contrast to my earlier athletic traumas.
However, as I had somewhat anticipated, the dynamics eventually shifted. I began hearing whispers of ‘try-outs’ and the demand for ‘extra training sessions.’ The initial inclusive ‘we welcome all skill and experience levels’ attitude gradually began to dissipate, and with it, much of the unadulterated fun. When the familiar competitive, sociopathic ‘mean girl’ flashbacks started to surface, I knew it was time for my graceful exit. Some scars, it seems, run deep.
Baseball & The Perfect Potluck Dessert Skewer
Fast forward several more years, and here I am, right in the thick of sports wind-up season, summer BBQs, and endless potlucks. This very dessert skewer creation made its debut at my son’s baseball wind-up. So, if you’re currently scrambling for a quick, exceptionally easy, and delightful no-bake dessert skewer idea that kids will absolutely adore, then these dessert kabobs are definitely worth a try!
I am incredibly fortunate that my children not only love sports but are actually quite good at them – a talent I certainly never possessed. For a while, I was perfectly content to live vicariously through their athletic achievements. That is, until I started practicing baseball with them. Something unexpected happened: I’ve gone and fallen back in love with the game myself! The simple joy of throwing a ball, catching a fly, and the collective energy of the sport has reawakened a dormant passion.
I’m now hoping to carve out enough time to join a baseball team next season. Fortunately, this time around, I come equipped with some actual skill and a bit of experience. My only real hope is that I’m not once again cursed with the company of sports sociopaths. However, even if that were to happen, it genuinely no longer matters as much. One of the glorious gifts that comes with aging is perspective. So, bring on the mean girls! My old scars have long since healed, and I am now emancipated from the shackles of giving a single crap about petty competitive nonsense. The focus now is on enjoyment, participation, and, of course, delicious desserts.

Ingredients
- ⅓ cup pecans, finely chopped * can substitute any chopped nut
- 16 whole marshmallows large
- 1 whole cantaloupe or any melon
- ½ cup butterscotch chips melted
- 2 teaspoons shortening * I use crisco
- 16 two-bite brownies
Instructions
-
In a small bowl, melt butterscotch chips on ½ power in the microwave (I use 5 on my microwave). As soon as you remove it, quickly stir in shortening to achieve a smooth consistency.
-
Immediately dip one side of each large marshmallow into the melted butterscotch chips. Place the undipped side down on a piece of parchment or wax paper and generously sprinkle with finely chopped nuts. Set aside to allow the butterscotch to firm up slightly.
-
Prepare the cantaloupe by chopping it into uniform cubes or scooping it into neat balls using a melon baller.
-
To assemble, thread a piece of cantaloupe through a large wooden skewer first, followed by a two-bite brownie, and then another piece of cantaloupe. Finally, thread the prepared marshmallow onto the skewer, ensuring that the undipped side is facing down (touching the cantaloupe) and the butterscotch-nut side is facing up. Arrange the completed skewers on a serving platter.
-
Serve the dessert skewers as soon as possible after assembly. This prevents the moisture from the cantaloupe from making the brownies soggy, ensuring the best taste and texture.

Tips for Perfect Rocky Road Melon Dessert Skewers:
- Melon Choice: While cantaloupe is specified, feel free to use other firm melons like honeydew or even watermelon for a different color and flavor profile. Ensure the melon is ripe but still firm enough to hold its shape on the skewer. Using a melon baller can create perfectly round, bite-sized pieces that look especially elegant, or simply chop into even cubes.
- Melting Butterscotch: When melting butterscotch chips, patience is key. Melting them on half power in the microwave prevents scorching and ensures a smooth, creamy consistency. Stirring in a bit of shortening (like Crisco) after melting helps to achieve that perfect dipping consistency and gives the coating a lovely sheen once set. If you don’t have butterscotch, chocolate chips or white chocolate chips can also be used for a delicious variation.
- Nut Alternatives: Pecans add a wonderful nutty flavor and crunch, but feel free to substitute with other finely chopped nuts like walnuts, almonds, or even peanuts for a different twist on the ‘Rocky Road’ theme. For those with nut allergies, you can omit them or use toasted shredded coconut for a textural contrast.
- Assembly Line: Set up an assembly line for threading the skewers. This makes the process much faster and more efficient. Have your melon, brownies, and dipped marshmallows ready to go. Remember to thread the marshmallow with the butterscotch-nut side facing up for the best visual appeal and to prevent sticking.
- Serving Suggestion: These skewers are best served relatively soon after assembly to prevent the moisture from the cantaloupe from making the brownies soggy. If you need to prepare them ahead of time, assemble them without the melon and add the melon just before serving, or keep the components separate and allow guests to build their own skewers for a fun interactive dessert bar!
The joy of ‘dessert on a stick’ cannot be overstated. It transforms a simple treat into a handheld delight, eliminating the need for plates and forks, making cleanup a breeze for hosts and enjoyment effortless for guests. These Rocky Road Melon Dessert Skewers embody everything a great potluck dessert should be: easy to make, fun to eat, and utterly irresistible.
