🥘 Essential Ingredients for Air Fryer Falafel

To create these wonderfully crispy air fryer falafel, you’ll only need a few basic ingredients. The beauty of using a mix lies in its simplicity, making this recipe accessible to even the most novice cooks.

  • Falafel Mix: This is the star of our recipe! While you can use any brand you prefer, we often recommend Casbah Natural Foods Falafel mix for its consistent quality and flavor. Many other brands, including options from stores like Trader Joe’s, also work exceptionally well. Just follow the package instructions for water quantities and resting time.
  • Water: As specified by your falafel mix package.
  • Cooking Oil Spray (Propellant-Free): A crucial ingredient for achieving that desirable golden-brown crisp without excess oil. It’s vital to use a spray that does NOT contain propellants, as these can damage the non-stick coating of your air fryer over time. Look for options like olive oil, canola oil, or avocado oil sprays that use a pump mechanism. We’ll discuss this further in our expert tips.

To transform your falafel balls into a satisfying meal, you’ll want to assemble delicious Falafel Pitas. Here are the additional components you’ll need for building the perfect wrap:

ingredients in air fryer falafel wrap, labelled in bowls
  • Pita Bread: Ensure you select pita pocket bread that is designed to split open, creating a convenient pocket for your fillings. Traditional Greek pitas are often thicker and typically do not open up in the same way, so double-check the packaging to avoid disappointment.
  • Tahini Sauce: This creamy, nutty sauce is a classic accompaniment to falafel. Keep in mind that “tahini sauce” is often not sold pre-made in regular grocery stores, unless from a specialty deli. You typically buy tahini (which is ground sesame seeds) and then prepare the sauce yourself by whisking it with fresh lemon juice, minced garlic, and water until it reaches a smooth, pourable consistency. Always check the ingredient list if you find a pre-made “tahini sauce” to ensure it meets your expectations.
  • Fresh Vegetables: Customize your pita with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, thinly sliced cucumbers, red onion, and pickles for added crunch and freshness.

📖 Falafel Variations & Smart Substitutions

One of the best aspects of this air fryer falafel recipe is its flexibility. Feel free to experiment with these variations and substitutions to tailor the falafel and accompanying pita wraps to your taste and dietary needs:

  • Falafel Mix: Any brand of falafel mix will work for this recipe. Popular choices like Casbah, Fantastic Foods, or even store brands like Trader Joe’s falafel mix, will all yield delicious results in the air fryer.
  • Falafel Shape: Instead of traditional falafel balls, you can easily form the mixture into falafel patties. Patties tend to cook a bit faster and are sometimes easier to fit into pita bread or serve over salads.
  • Greens for Your Wrap: While classic iceberg lettuce provides a satisfying crunch, you can absolutely substitute it with romaine lettuce, tender leaf lettuce, or buttery Boston/butter lettuce for different textures and flavor profiles. Fresh spinach or mixed greens are also excellent choices.
  • Pita Bread: Opt for whole wheat pita bread instead of white pita for a boost in fiber and a nuttier flavor. For those with gluten sensitivities, a good quality gluten-free pita bread can be used to make this recipe entirely gluten-free.
  • Sauce for Falafels: Beyond tahini sauce, explore other delicious options to drizzle over your falafels. Try a refreshing tzatziki sauce for a Mediterranean twist, or a creamy homemade hummus for added richness and protein. A simple squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of fresh herbs can also elevate the flavor.
  • Cooking Spray Options: The best oils for air frying have high smoke points. Good choices for your non-propellant oil spray include olive oil spray, canola oil spray, or avocado oil spray. These ensure even cooking and a great crisp without burning. You can learn more about the best types of oil to use in your air fryer HERE.
  • Add a Spicy Kick: If you enjoy a bit of heat, sprinkle some red pepper flakes directly into your falafel mix before forming the balls, or add a dash of hot sauce to your tahini or tzatziki sauce.
  • Additional Fillings: Get creative with your pita fillings! Consider adding sliced cucumbers, pickled turnips, feta cheese (if not keeping vegan), Kalamata olives, or even a sprinkle of fresh parsley or mint for vibrant flavor.

🔪 How to Make Air Fryer Falafel Balls: A Simple Guide

Making falafel in the air fryer is incredibly straightforward. Follow these steps for perfectly crispy, flavorful falafel every time:

falafel mix and water combined in a glass bowl
STEP 1: Prepare the Falafel Mix

In a large mixing bowl, combine the falafel mix with the specified amount of water according to the package directions. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and no dry spots remain. Let the mixture stand for the recommended time (usually around 10 minutes) to allow the ingredients to hydrate and the flavors to meld. This step is crucial for the falafel to hold its shape during cooking.

STEP 2: Preheat and Prepare the Air Fryer

While your falafel mixture is resting, preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly spray the inside of your air fryer basket or drawers with a couple of pumps of your chosen cooking oil spray. This prevents sticking and helps achieve a beautiful golden crust. Ensure an even coating of oil.

STEP 3: Form the Falafel Balls

Once the mixture has rested, it’s time to form the falafel balls. Scoop out portions of the batter and roll them into small, approximately 1-inch to 1.5-inch balls. You can use your hands, a small cookie scoop, or even a specialized falafel scoop for consistency. Depending on the size, a standard box mix usually yields between 18 to 20 falafel balls.

STEP 4: Arrange in Air Fryer

Carefully place the formed falafel balls in a single layer within your preheated air fryer basket or drawers. It’s important to avoid overcrowding the basket, as this can lead to uneven cooking and less crispy falafels. While it’s best to keep them slightly spaced apart for optimal airflow, it’s generally okay if they lightly touch. Cook in batches if necessary.

STEP 5: Lightly Spray Again

Once the falafel balls are arranged in the air fryer, give them another light spray with 2-3 pumps of cooking oil. This second coat helps to enhance crispiness and promote an even golden-brown color during the air frying process. This step is key to achieving that desirable deep-fried texture without excessive oil.

STEP 6: Air Fry to Golden Perfection

Close the air fryer and cook the falafel balls at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for a total of 10 minutes. At the halfway point (around 5 minutes), gently shake the basket or turn the falafel balls using silicone tongs to ensure even cooking and browning on all sides. You can also spray another light pump of oil at this stage if desired, though with certain models like the Ninja Foodi, it may not be strictly necessary. The falafel balls will turn a beautiful golden brown and may show a few small cracks, which is perfectly normal and indicates they are cooked through and crispy.

Falafel Pita Wrap: Assembly & Serving

Once your falafel balls are perfectly air-fried and crispy, it’s time to assemble your delicious falafel pita wraps. This is where you can truly customize your meal with your favorite fresh toppings and sauces!

  • Warm the Pita: Lightly warm your pita bread for a minute or two in the microwave, air fryer, or a dry skillet. This makes them more pliable and enhances their flavor.
  • Fill Your Pocket: Carefully open one half of an 8-inch pita pocket. Add a generous layer of your desired fresh fillings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, and thinly sliced red onion.
  • Add Falafel: Place 2-3 warm air-fried falafel balls into the pita pocket. The number will depend on the size of your falafel and pita.
  • Drizzle with Sauce: Finish your wrap with a generous drizzle of homemade tahini sauce (see NOTES for the recipe), refreshing tzatziki, or creamy hummus. The sauce brings all the flavors together!

Beyond wraps, air fryer falafels are also fantastic as:

  • Salad Toppers: Crumble them over a fresh green salad with a lemon-tahini dressing.
  • Mezze Platter: Serve them alongside hummus, baba ghanoush, olives, and pickled vegetables for an appetizer spread.

💡 Expert Tips for Perfect Air-Fried Falafel

Achieving consistently delicious air-fried falafel is easy with a few insider tips. Here’s what you need to know to get the best results every time:

  • Choose the Right Air Fryer: While this recipe works in various air fryer brands, having a reliable model can make a difference. We personally love our Ninja Foodi for its versatility and consistent performance. If you’re in the market for an air fryer and unsure which one to choose, consult our detailed article on What to Look for in an Air Fryer.
  • Invest in Silicone Tongs: To protect the non-stick coating on the inside of your air fryer basket, always use silicone-tipped tongs when handling food or turning falafels. Metal utensils can scratch and damage the surface over time, potentially impacting its performance and longevity.
  • Use the Correct Oil Spray: This is a critical tip! Always spray your falafel balls (and any other food you put in the air fryer) with a light coating of cooking oil using a non-aerosol, pump-style spray bottle. **NEVER use aerosol cooking sprays with propellants (like some brands of Pam)**. The chemical propellants found in these cans can leave a sticky residue that builds up on your air fryer’s non-stick surface, causing it to flake off and potentially contaminate your food. Always read the label to ensure your spray is propellant-free. Good options include pure olive oil, avocado oil, or canola oil in a refillable mister.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: For optimal crispiness and even cooking, arrange falafel balls in a single layer with a little space between them. Overcrowding can steam the food rather than fry it, leading to soggy falafels. Cook in batches if necessary.
  • Preheat Your Air Fryer: Just like a traditional oven, preheating your air fryer ensures a consistent cooking temperature from the start, contributing to better texture and browning.
  • Check for Doneness: Falafels should be golden brown and crispy on the outside, and cooked through on the inside. If they seem soft or pale after the recommended cooking time, add another 1-2 minutes until they reach your desired crispness.
  • Adjust for Your Air Fryer Model: Cooking times can vary slightly between different air fryer models and wattages. The first time you make this recipe, keep an eye on your falafels and adjust the cooking time as needed for your specific appliance.

🌡️ Storage and Reheating Tips

Proper storage ensures your air fryer falafels remain delicious, and effective reheating brings back their crispness. Here’s how to store and enjoy your leftovers:

  • Refrigeration: Store leftover air-fried falafel balls in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. For falafel pita wraps, it’s best to store the wet ingredients (like lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber) separately from the falafel balls and pita bread. This prevents the falafels from becoming soggy.
  • Pita Bread Storage: Pita bread can be kept at room temperature in its original packaging until its expiry date, or frozen for longer storage.
  • Freezing Falafel Balls: Once completely cooled, falafel balls freeze exceptionally well. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to flash freeze for about 30 minutes, then transfer them to an airtight freezer-safe container or bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating Falafel: For best results, reheat falafel balls in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until heated through and crispy. You can also reheat them in a conventional oven at the same temperature until warmed. Avoid microwaving, as this can make them soft and chewy rather than crispy.
  • Reheating Pita Bread: Thaw frozen pita bread first, then warm lightly in the air fryer, microwave, or a dry skillet until soft and pliable.

👪 Serving Size & Yield

This healthy air fryer falafel recipe, using a standard box mix, typically yields about 18-20 falafel balls, depending on how large you form each one. When assembling them into pita wraps, where each wrap comfortably holds 2-3 falafel balls, you can expect to make approximately 6 complete falafel pitas. This recipe is perfect for feeding a family or for meal prepping a few lunches throughout the week.

🔢 Weight Watchers Points Information

These Air Fryer Falafels are a Weight Watchers friendly option, clocking in at approximately 3 WW points per serving (based on 3 falafel balls per serving). Please note that this point calculation does NOT include any accompanying sauces like tahini sauce, which you would need to calculate separately if you choose to use it.

For lower point sauce options, consider using our WW friendly hummus or WW friendly Tzatziki sauce, which generally have fewer points. Remember that cooking oil sprays, such as Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Spray, are often 0 points for a short 5-second spray. If you use more than this, be sure to calculate the additional points using the Weight Watchers app.

❔ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about Air Fryer Falafel

Is it better to deep fry or air fry falafel?

Air frying falafel is generally considered a healthier and less messy option compared to deep frying. With an air fryer, you use significantly less oil to achieve a crispy texture, reducing the fat content and making cleanup much easier. While deep-fried falafels are traditionally very rich, air frying offers a guilt-free way to enjoy a similar crunch and flavor.

Why did my falafel disintegrate in the air fryer?

Falafels can sometimes fall apart in the air fryer for a few reasons. One common cause is turning them too soon; they need to cook for at least 2 minutes (ideally 4-5 minutes on one side) to form a crust before being flipped or shaken. Another reason can be a mixture that is too wet. If you’re using a box mix, ensure you measure the water precisely according to the package instructions and allow the mixture to sit for the recommended amount of time. This resting period allows the dry ingredients to fully absorb the liquid, creating a firmer, more cohesive dough.

Why is my falafel not crunchy?

If your air fryer falafel balls or patties aren’t achieving that desired crunchy texture, there are a couple of likely culprits. Firstly, they might not have cooked long enough; extend the cooking time by a few minutes until they are golden brown and firm. Secondly, the falafel dough itself might have been too wet, which can prevent it from crisping up properly. Ensure you’ve followed the package instructions for water-to-mix ratio, and don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, as this can lead to steaming instead of frying.

Can I make falafel from scratch in the air fryer?

Absolutely! While this recipe focuses on a convenient mix, you can certainly make homemade falafel from scratch and cook them in the air fryer. The process for forming the falafel balls and air frying them would remain similar to the steps outlined in this recipe. Just ensure your homemade falafel mixture has the right consistency – firm enough to hold its shape but not too dry – for optimal air frying results.

What’s the best way to get extra crispy air fryer falafel?

To achieve maximum crispiness, a few things help. Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, allowing plenty of air circulation around each falafel ball. Ensure you spray the falafels lightly with oil both before and halfway through cooking. You can also increase the cooking temperature slightly for the last 1-2 minutes if they need a final boost of crispness, but be careful not to burn them.

Embracing the air fryer for your falafel cravings is truly a smart choice. It offers a healthier, significantly less messy, quicker, and remarkably easy way to enjoy these delicious Middle Eastern fritters. This Air Fryer Falafel Pita recipe is not just another meal; it’s an ideal weeknight dinner solution that brings authentic flavors to your table with minimal fuss. Instructions

  • Combine water and falafel mix together as per package directions and let stand (as per package directions – usually about 10 minutes)
  • Meanwhile, spray the inside of your air fryer basket or drawers with a couple pumps of cooking oil spray.
  • Form into approximately 1 inch – 1.5 inch balls – you’ll get 18 -20 depending on how big you make them.
  • Place falafel balls in single layer in basket or drawers.

*Try to keep them spaced apart, but it’s okay if they touch

  • Spray with another 2-3 pumps of oil spray.
  • Air-fry on 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 10 minutes. You can shake or turn at halfway point (5 minutes) and spray a couple more pumps of oil, but you don’t have to if you have a Ninja Foodi (I didn’t).

*The falafel balls will look a little cracked, but this is fine.

Falafel Pita Wrap Assembly

  • Add your desired fillings into warm pita bread (½ an 8 inch pita pocket) and add 2-3 falafel balls.
  • Drizzle generously with tahini sauce, tzatziki sauce or hummus (See NOTES for Tahini sauce recipe)

Notes

SAUCE FOR FALAFELS RECIPE: Quick & Easy Tahini Sauce

*You generally cannot buy “tahini sauce” unless it’s from a deli. You buy tahini (which is ground-up sesame seeds), then you need to make the sauce by adding lemon, garlic and water. Just be sure to check the ingredients if it says “tahini sauce”.

*Nutrition information (calculation) and WW points does NOT include sauce

EXPERT TIPS:

    • You will need an air fryer. I have a Ninja Foodi, which I love, but if you don’t, not to worry, you can make these in a variety of air fryer brands. If you don’t have an air fryer, but are in the market for one but not sure what type to get, check out my article on What to Look for in an Air Fryer.
    • Use silicon tongs. I also recommend using silicon tongs so you don’t damage the finish on the inside of your air fryer.
    • Spray your falafel balls (and anything you put in the air fryer) with a light spray cooking oil, but do NOT use an aerosol cooking spray with propellants (like Pam). This can cause damage to the surface of your air fryer and cause the coating to flake off and potentially onto your food. *The label will tell you whether it has propellants or not.

STORAGE:

Store leftover falafel in an airtight container in the fridge. The wet ingredients (lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.) should be stored separately from the falafel balls in the fridge for 3-4 days. The pita bread can be stored at room temperature to the expiry date on the package.

These falafel balls can be frozen (once cooled) in an airtight container for up to 3 months. The pita bread can also be frozen.
