The inspiration for these delightful spoon desserts struck me after encountering a similar concept at an event earlier this year. I was captivated by the idea of a bite-sized, elegant dessert, but I knew I could elevate it further by incorporating healthier ingredients. My vision led me to create a creamy chocolate avocado mousse – a naturally rich and wholesome alternative to traditional chocolate pudding. Paired with fresh, vibrant strawberries, a touch of dark chocolate, and a sprinkle of coconut, these mini desserts became the embodiment of sweet satisfaction with just a hint of guilt-free indulgence. They prove that healthy eating doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or elegance.

🥘 Ingredient Notes

Each ingredient in this recipe plays a crucial role, not just in flavor but also in contributing to the overall health benefits and delightful texture of these spoon desserts. Understanding their properties will help you achieve the best possible result.

  • Avocado: While often perceived for its healthy fats, avocados are truly nutritional powerhouses. Each avocado typically contains around 160 calories and 15 grams of healthy monounsaturated fats, which are excellent for heart health. They are also incredibly rich in fiber, with 7 out of 9 grams of carbohydrates being dietary fiber, resulting in only 2 “net” carbs. This makes avocados an ideal low-carb, plant-based food. Beyond their nutritional profile, avocados are the secret to the mousse’s incredibly creamy, velvety texture, replacing traditional dairy or heavy cream while providing a neutral base that beautifully absorbs the chocolate flavor. Choose a ripe avocado that yields slightly to gentle pressure but isn’t overly soft or mushy.
  • Agave: This natural, unrefined sweetener is derived from the agave plant and offers a subtly sweet profile that is often perceived as sweeter than standard table sugar. It is rich in fructose, and while it contains slightly more carbs per teaspoon (5 grams) compared to table sugar (4 grams), its higher sweetness intensity often means you can use less to achieve the desired level of sweetness. Agave also has a lower glycemic index compared to granulated sugar, making it a favorable choice for those monitoring blood sugar levels. Its liquid form helps integrate smoothly into the mousse, preventing any granular texture.
  • Almond extract: A small amount of almond extract works wonders in this chocolate avocado mousse, adding a sophisticated and unexpected hint of nutty flavor. This subtle addition beautifully complements the richness of the chocolate and the freshness of the strawberries, elevating the overall taste experience beyond a simple chocolate pudding. Ensure you use pure almond extract for the best flavor, rather than imitation versions.
  • Dark chocolate bar: The choice of chocolate significantly impacts the depth of flavor in these desserts. I highly recommend using a high-quality dark chocolate bar with a high cocoa percentage, such as Lindt Supreme Dark Chocolate (90% cocoa), as specified in the original recipe. Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants and provides a robust, slightly bitter counterpoint to the sweetness of the mousse and strawberries. Its intensity prevents the dessert from being overly sweet and adds a luxurious finish. You can chop a bar into small pieces or use pre-cut squares.
  • Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is essential for intensifying the chocolate flavor in the mousse without adding extra sugar. It provides that deep, rich chocolate taste that pairs so well with avocado.
  • Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla extract rounds out the flavors in the mousse, adding warmth and sweetness that complements the chocolate and almond notes.
  • Milk: A small amount of milk (dairy or non-dairy) is used to help achieve the perfect consistency for the mousse, ensuring it blends smoothly and pipes beautifully.

📖 Variations & Substitutions

One of the joys of cooking is the ability to adapt recipes to suit your preferences or dietary needs. These chocolate avocado mousse and strawberry spoon desserts are incredibly versatile. Here are some ideas to inspire your creativity:

  • Agave: If agave isn’t readily available or you prefer a different sweetener, liquid honey can be a suitable substitute. However, honey is typically less sweet than agave, so you’ll need to double the amount to achieve a comparable level of sweetness. Other alternatives include maple syrup for a richer, more robust flavor, or even a sugar-free alternative like stevia or monk fruit sweetener, adjusted to taste.
  • Dairy-free: This recipe is already largely dairy-free due to the use of avocado, but to ensure it’s completely so, opt for dairy-free milk alternatives such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, or even a light coconut milk. These will seamlessly integrate into the mousse without altering the flavor profile significantly.
  • Strawberries: While strawberries are a classic and delicious choice, feel free to experiment with other fresh fruits or berries. Raspberries, blueberries, or sliced cherries would add a delightful burst of color and flavor. Banana slices could also work well, especially if you enjoy a banana-chocolate combination. Ensure any fruit used is fresh and cut into small, manageable pieces for presentation on the spoon.
  • Chocolate: The recipe calls for dark chocolate, which provides a rich, intense flavor. However, you can certainly use another type of chocolate to match your taste. Milk chocolate will yield a sweeter, creamier dessert, while white chocolate would create a beautiful color contrast and a milder, sweeter flavor. Chocolate chips can also be used as a topping for convenience, or even cacao nibs for an extra crunch and pure chocolate flavor.
  • Silver Spoon Desserts: For an extra touch of sophistication and elegance, consider using small silver or porcelain dessert spoons instead of disposable plastic ones. These elevate the presentation, making the mini desserts feel even more special and luxurious. Small ramen or soup spoons can also work beautifully.
  • Additional Toppings: Beyond coconut and chopped strawberries, consider adding a sprinkle of toasted nuts (like chopped pistachios or almonds), a tiny mint leaf for color and freshness, or a dusting of extra cocoa powder just before serving. A small dollop of dairy-free whipped cream could also be a delightful addition.

🔪 How to Make Chocolate Strawberry Spoon Desserts

Creating these elegant and healthy mini desserts is surprisingly straightforward. Follow these steps for a perfect outcome every time.

Make the Avocado Chocolate Mousse:

The foundation of this dessert is the silky-smooth chocolate avocado mousse. It’s quick to prepare and incredibly versatile.

  1. Prepare the Avocado: Begin by carefully cutting the ripe avocado in half lengthwise. Gently twist the halves apart and remove the large pit. Using a spoon, scoop out all the vibrant green flesh from both halves and transfer it directly into a small blender or food processor. Ensure the avocado is ripe enough to be easily mashed but not overly soft.
  2. Add Mousse Ingredients: To the avocado in your blender or food processor, add the agave syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, milk (dairy or non-dairy), and almond extract. These ingredients will transform the avocado into a rich, flavorful mousse.
  3. Blend until Smooth: Secure the lid on your blender or food processor and blend the ingredients until the mixture is incredibly smooth and creamy. This may take 1-2 minutes, possibly longer depending on your appliance. Pause periodically to scrape down the sides of the bowl or blender container to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated and no avocado chunks remain. The goal is a truly uniform, velvety mousse.

Once your mousse is prepared, it’s time for the artistic assembly. This is where these mini desserts truly shine!

Assembly:

Half a strawberry with the sliced side facing up and stem still attached, placed at the bottom of a small dessert spoon.
STEP 1

Begin by preparing your strawberries. Take 7 strawberries, hull them neatly, and cut each in half lengthwise. Place one half of a strawberry, with the sliced side facing up and the stem end towards the back of the spoon, onto the bottom of each mini dessert spoon. This creates a stable and visually appealing base for your mousse.

STEP 2

Next, transfer your smooth chocolate avocado mousse into a pastry bag fitted with a 1M star tip. If you don’t have a pastry bag or tip, a simple resealable plastic bag with one corner snipped off will work just as well. Pipe a generous dollop of mousse onto each strawberry half, creating a beautiful swirl similar to frosting a mini cupcake. Refer to the video in the notes section for a visual guide on piping techniques if needed.

STEP 3

Now, prepare your dark chocolate topping. If using a chocolate bar, carefully cut each square in half to create smaller, elegant pieces. Gently press one half-piece of chocolate into the center of the piped mousse on each strawberry spoon. This adds a beautiful structural element and an extra layer of chocolatey goodness.

Finely chopped strawberries sprinkled on top of the chocolate avocado mousse, positioned in front of the dark chocolate piece on the spoon dessert.
STEP 4

For a final fresh touch, take the remaining strawberries (after hulling and cutting the initial 7 for the base) and finely chop them. Sprinkle a few pieces of these vibrant chopped strawberries on top of the mousse, placing them artfully in front of the dark chocolate bar piece. This adds a pop of color, texture, and fresh fruit flavor to each bite.

STEP 5

To complete the garnish, sprinkle a tiny amount of unsweetened coconut flakes over the top of the mousse on each spoon. For an even more elaborate presentation, arrange a few whole, un-cut strawberries on the serving plate alongside the spoons. This final touch enhances the visual appeal and signals the fresh ingredients used in these delightful treats, helping you stay on track with your health goals!

Recipe Tips for Perfection

Achieving the perfect chocolate avocado mousse and strawberry spoon desserts is easy with a few expert tips. These suggestions will help ensure your treats are as delicious and visually appealing as possible.

  • Choose the Right Avocado for Optimal Creaminess: The success of your mousse hinges on the avocado’s ripeness. Always select a ripe, creamy avocado, ideally a Hass avocado, known for its rich texture. To check for ripeness, gently press the skin; it should yield slightly without being too soft or mushy. An overly hard avocado won’t blend smoothly, while an overripe one might impart an undesirable flavor.
  • Blend Thoroughly for a Silky-Smooth Mousse: For that luxurious, silky-smooth mousse texture, it’s crucial to blend the ingredients for at least 1-2 minutes in a food processor or high-speed blender. Be sure to pause and scrape down the sides of the container multiple times. This ensures that every bit of avocado is fully incorporated and no chunks remain, yielding a perfectly uniform consistency free of any avocado flavor.
  • Chill the Mousse Before Piping for Better Structure: After blending, resist the urge to immediately pipe the mousse. Instead, transfer it to an airtight container and let it chill in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. This brief chilling period allows the mousse to firm up slightly, making it much easier to pipe into elegant shapes and ensuring it holds its form beautifully on the strawberries.
  • Use High-Quality Dark Chocolate for Rich Flavor: The quality of your chocolate makes a significant difference. Opt for a premium dark chocolate bar, ideally with 70-90% cocoa content, as its intensity balances the sweetness of the mousse and fruit. High-quality chocolate adds depth and richness, and bars with subtle notes of fruit or nuts can wonderfully complement the strawberries.
  • Prep Strawberries with Care for Elegant Presentation: An elegant dessert demands careful preparation of its components. Take the time to hull your strawberries cleanly (remove the leafy green top) and slice them evenly. Using a small paring knife or a dedicated strawberry huller will give you precise, attractive cuts, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your spoon desserts.
  • Select the Perfect Mini Dessert Spoons: The serving vessel contributes significantly to the elegance of these treats. While plastic mini spoons (like those found at dollar or party stores, or from brands like Kingrol) are convenient and pictured in the recipe, consider using small ceramic or porcelain tasting spoons for a more sophisticated touch. Small ramen or soup spoons, or any petite, aesthetically pleasing spoons, can also work beautifully. Ensure they are small enough to hold a single, delightful bite.
  • Make Ahead Option: These spoon desserts are excellent for making ahead. You can assemble them up to 24 hours in advance. Store them carefully in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent them from absorbing fridge odors.
  • Serving Temperature: While the mousse needs chilling, the overall dessert is best served slightly chilled, allowing the flavors of the chocolate and strawberry to shine without being too cold.

🔢 Weight Watchers Points & Healthy Indulgence

One of the most appealing aspects of these mini desserts, beyond their incredible taste and elegant appearance, is their health-conscious profile. The beauty of bite-sized treats lies in their inherent portion control, allowing you to indulge your cravings without derailing your wellness journey. These delightful dessert spoons are remarkably light, clocking in at only 3 Weight Watchers points per serving. This makes them a perfect fit for anyone actively managing their intake while still wanting to enjoy a truly satisfying and delicious dessert. 🌡️ Storage Guidelines

To keep your leftover chocolate avocado mousse and strawberry spoon desserts fresh and delicious, proper storage is key. Place any remaining assembled desserts in an airtight container immediately after serving. Store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. While the flavors will remain delightful, the fresh strawberries are at their peak on the day of assembly. The mousse might firm up slightly more when chilled, which can actually enhance its texture. For best results in terms of presentation, if making ahead for more than a few hours, consider adding the final garnishes (like fresh chopped strawberries and coconut) just before serving.

❔ Recipe FAQs

Here are answers to some common questions you might have about making these chocolate avocado mousse and strawberry spoon desserts:

Can I make this spoon dessert ahead of time?

Absolutely! These desserts are fantastic for meal prepping or preparing in advance for parties. You can assemble them up to 24 hours before serving. To maintain their freshness and prevent the strawberries from weeping too much, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For the absolute best presentation, I recommend adding the final garnishes, such as the coconut sprinkles and any additional whole strawberries on the plate, just before you plan to serve them.

What can I use if I don’t have a food processor?

No food processor? No problem! A high-speed blender is an excellent alternative for creating a wonderfully smooth avocado mousse. If you don’t have either, you can still make this dessert. Thoroughly mash the ripe avocado with a fork until it’s as smooth as possible, then mix in the remaining mousse ingredients by hand with a whisk. While the texture might be slightly less uniform than with a blender or food processor, it will still be delicious.

What’s the best way to pipe the mousse without a piping bag and frosting tip?

If you find yourself without a piping bag and specific frosting tips, a simple resealable plastic bag (like a Ziploc bag) works wonderfully! Just spoon the prepared chocolate avocado mousse into one corner of the bag. Snip off a very small piece of the corner with scissors to create an opening. Then, gently squeeze the bag and pipe the mousse onto the strawberries in a circular or spiral motion, just as you would with a regular pastry bag.

Can I use frozen strawberries?

While fresh strawberries are highly recommended for their firm texture and vibrant appearance in this recipe, you could use frozen strawberries for the chopped topping if fresh are unavailable. However, allow them to thaw completely and drain any excess liquid thoroughly to prevent them from making the mousse watery. For the base, fresh strawberries are essential for structural integrity.

How can I adjust the sweetness level?

The sweetness level in this recipe is balanced by the natural sugars in agave and the dark chocolate. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, you can incrementally add an extra teaspoon or two of agave syrup to the mousse mixture and blend to taste. Conversely, if you want it less sweet, slightly reduce the amount of agave. Keep in mind that the dark chocolate and fresh strawberries also contribute to the overall flavor profile.

Recipe Tips:

  • Choose the Right Avocado: Use a ripe, creamy avocado for the mousse. To check if it’s ripe, gently press the skin – it should yield slightly without being too soft. Hass avocados work best due to their rich texture and creamy consistency.
  • Blend Thoroughly: For a silky-smooth mousse, blend the ingredients in a food processor or high-speed blender for at least 1-2 minutes, pausing to scrape down the sides. This ensures there are no avocado chunks and the texture is perfectly uniform.
  • Chill the Mousse Before Piping: After blending the mousse, transfer it to a bowl and let it chill in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. This firms up the texture slightly, making it much easier to pipe and helping it hold its elegant shape on the strawberry base.
  • Use High-Quality Chocolate: Opt for a premium dark chocolate bar (70-90% cocoa) to balance the sweetness of the mousse and enhance the overall flavor. High-quality chocolate bars with subtle notes of fruit or nuts complement the strawberries beautifully.
  • Prep Strawberries with Care: Hulling strawberries cleanly and slicing them evenly is key for an elegant presentation. Use a small paring knife or a strawberry huller for precision and a polished look.
  • Use Mini Dessert Spoons: For an elegant look, serve these on dedicated dessert spoons. The plastic spoons shown in the photos are readily available at most dollar or party stores. They are commonly called Mini Spoons or Disposable Mini Dessert Spoons. Alternatively, small ramen/soup spoons, or any small porcelain tasting spoons, would also work beautifully for a more formal touch.
