Deep Fried Delights at the Calgary Stampede

Calgary Stampede’s Culinary Carnival: Deep-Fried Delights, Disappointments, and Family Fun

The annual Calgary Stampede is a spectacle of rodeo, rides, and, most famously, truly unique “food” innovations. Every year, the midway unveils a list of culinary creations that often push the boundaries of what one might consider a wholesome meal. These deep-fried treats, often bizarre and always indulgent, are a quintessential part of the Stampede experience, drawing eager crowds ready to embark on a gastronomic adventure, whether for good or for ill. While one might question if these concoctions truly qualify as “food” in the traditional sense, they undeniably form a beloved, albeit unconventional, part of the Stampede’s charm and tradition. From sweet to savory, and everything in between, these treats promise an unforgettable taste of carnival culture, usually with a generous coating of batter and a trip to the deep fryer.

Hunting for New Tastes on the Midway

This particular year, the rumor mill buzzed with talk of nearly two dozen new and outlandish food items gracing the Stampede grounds. However, during my visit on the very last day of the event, navigating the bustling food zones, most of these supposed newcomers were conspicuously absent. Instead, I encountered the familiar array of classic carnival fare. Amidst the usual suspects, a single new item caught my eye and piqued my curiosity: the Salted Caramel Deep Fried Coffee. It stood out as the sole novel offering I could find, and given the general excitement surrounding Stampede food, I felt compelled to give it a try and report back on this intriguing creation. My expectations, as with most fair food, were a mix of cautious optimism and prepared disappointment, but the allure of deep-fried coffee was too strong to resist.

Ordering this intriguing item proved to be an experience in itself. A full serving came with a dozen pieces, priced at a rather steep $8.00. Contemplating the sheer volume and cost for a mere “try,” I opted for the iced cap combo, which graciously offered a half order. However, even this scaled-down option came with an additional price tag. To enjoy the coveted salted caramel flavor, rather than the more pedestrian “plain” version, an extra $2.00 was required, bringing my total for this experimental snack to a hefty $10.00. It felt like a significant investment for what was essentially a small tasting, yet the curiosity surrounding this deep-fried coffee compelled me to proceed.

A Coffee Conundrum: Taste and Expectations

My order process continued with another slightly humorous interaction. When requesting the iced cap as “low-fat,” I half-expected to be met with laughter or a bewildered stare. After all, this wasn’t a trendy urban coffee shop; it was the Calgary Stampede, a place where dietary restrictions often take a backseat to indulgence. Yet, to my surprise, the young woman behind the counter was incredibly tolerant and accommodating. While a true “low-fat” option wasn’t available, she kindly offered a “light cream” version. I accepted, reasoning that it was likely the closest I’d get to a healthier choice, and secretly acknowledging that a little fat often enhances flavor. And indeed, that iced cap was surprisingly delicious! It served as a stark reminder that I probably don’t indulge in enough high-fat frozen beverages.

Before allowing the kids to partake in the deep-fried coffee treats, a crucial question arose: were these espresso bombs, potent enough to send them into a caffeine-fueled frenzy? I inquired with the vendor, who calmly assured me, “Yeah, no problem. It’s just some coffee and cake mix.” His casual response was quite a contrast to the Stampede blog’s more evocative description: “Fresh hot deep-fried coffee treats drizzled in caramel and Himalayan sea salt. Perfect for your salty sweet cravings! Five different flavors to get your morning fix.” The discrepancy between “some coffee and cake mix” and “fresh hot deep-fried coffee treats drizzled in caramel and Himalayan sea salt” was amusing, to say the least, and it immediately lowered my lofty expectations for a truly coffee-centric flavor profile.

The Verdict: A Timbit-Like Disappointment

My expectations for the deep-fried coffee, as with most fair food, were admittedly modest. I’m not a regular consumer of this type of indulgent carnival cuisine, so I wasn’t anticipating a gourmet experience. However, I did expect, at the very least, a discernible coffee flavor. To my profound disappointment, they tasted nothing like coffee. In fact, I could have easily mistaken them for a standard timbit (a Canadian doughnut hole) and been none the wiser. The only real difference was that a timbit would likely have offered a more satisfying and enjoyable taste experience. The “coffee” aspect was entirely lost in the batter and frying process, making the name feel somewhat misleading.

The “salted caramel” component also left much to be desired. As someone who has embraced and even created numerous salted caramel dishes over the years, I’ve developed a genuine fondness for this persistent food trend. While I half-expected salted caramel to have faded into obscurity years ago, I’m genuinely glad it hasn’t, as I truly enjoy its complex flavor profile. However, on these deep-fried coffee treats, the salted caramel was barely noticeable. Perhaps it was the “Himalayan sea salt” that was supposed to provide the saltiness, but it failed to deliver the distinct, balanced flavor I’ve come to associate with quality salted caramel. The overall effect was underwhelming, and it certainly didn’t live up to the promise of a “salty sweet craving” satisfier. Ultimately, I didn’t even finish them, and to my dismay, I couldn’t even convince my kids to polish off the remaining pieces, which is usually a surefire sign of culinary failure.

A Safe Bet: Pizza for the Kids

While my deep-fried coffee adventure ended in disappointment, the kids made a far more sensible choice. They settled on classic pepperoni pizza, a universally beloved and generally reliable option. Fortunately, they hadn’t spotted some of the more adventurous offerings, like the butter chicken poutine, which I’m certain they would have clamored for given the chance. I had initially predicted they might gravitate towards other trendy carnival items, such as mac and cheese or taco pizza, but to my relief, pepperoni pizza was their final decision. I sampled a bite, and I must concede, it was remarkably good for carnival pizza – flavorful, cheesy, and satisfying. More importantly, pepperoni pizza is a relatively safe culinary bet, unlike some of the more experimental alternatives that often populate fairgrounds. As a parent, avoiding any late-night upset stomachs is always a top priority, so I was perfectly content with their choice, knowing it would likely result in a peaceful evening.

An Unplanned Last-Day Adventure at Stampede

This entire Stampede visit was entirely unplanned, a spontaneous decision made on the very last day of the event. The catalyst? A tip I stumbled upon on Facebook the previous night about free admission. Who says social media isn’t a reliable news source? We arrived at the grounds with just two minutes to spare before the free entry period ended, seizing the opportunity for an impromptu family outing. Free admission to the Stampede, especially on the final day, is an almost unheard-of occurrence. It led me to speculate that perhaps the attendance numbers for the year were lower than usual, possibly due to the consistently lousy weather that had plagued the week. Whatever the reason, I was incredibly grateful that we were able to take advantage of this rare offer. The kids, who hadn’t been to Stampede in about four years, were absolutely thrilled, their excitement palpable. And for all of us, it was a welcome respite – a precious few hours without rain in what had been a long, persistently wet week. It proved to be a fantastic, albeit unexpected, way to cap off the Stampede season.

And for the grand finale of our Stampede adventure: a classic carnival moment where Daddy, with a bit of skill and a lot of luck, won his little girl a prize at one of the games. Her chosen reward? None other than the ubiquitous and hilariously popular poop emoji stuffed toy. It was the perfect, quirky end to a day filled with unexpected culinary experiments, spontaneous outings, and cherished family memories.
